Dan Walker: 'It's a crime' BBC Breakfast host is miraculously mocked after 'retire' remark

Dan Walker pushed style boundaries, at least where some are concerned, when he wore a checked shirt to host BBC Breakfast on Tuesday morning. The 42-year-old presenter’s red and white patterned shirt was worn under a navy blazer, which he paired with a slim tie. Revealing his outfit of choice on Twitter, he told his 55,800 followers he would not be wearing the top again after some unnerving feedback. In a picture shared on the website his co-star Louise Minchin is seen pointing at the garment with a disgruntled expression on her face.

The father-of-three captioned the hilarious photo: “The check shirt hasn’t gone down very well with you today.

“I think I will have to retire it and I’m not sure Louise Minchin will miss it much.”

Fans of the star had compared his shirt to all sorts of things, likening the attire to a table cloth and the lid of Bonne Maman jam.

Commenting on Dan’s look, one fan joked: “He needs a picnic basket and a sunny day,” as another quipped: “It’s a crime against humanity with that suit and tie combo.”

A third person wrote: “French tablecloth style. Very European,” while a fourth shared a picture of a bottle of jam with the caption: “Inspiration be like…”

Someone else claimed the shirt was “a bit much” for a morning programme: “It didn’t look right with a suit and tie, was a bit much at 6am this morning.”

Others disagreed with the unpleasant comments, with some describing his shirt as “lovely” and a “great” buy.

One person penned: “It made a nice change I say!” while a second shared: “Aaah I liked it Dan. Wear what you like I say.”

A third contributor exclaimed: “Ah Louise… it’s a lovely shirt!” as another said: “Great shirt. Keep it!”

Dan’s post comes after he admitted he “failed” to deliver during a photoshoot with Louise, in which they attempted to copy Line of Duty stars Vicky McClure and Martin Compston.

On Instagram, the TV star joked about his inability to mirror the expression of Line of Duty actor Martin, 34, as he was captured smiling in the photo.

Alongside a picture of himself with Louise, 50, he told his 69,800 Instagram followers: “See you on BBC Breakfast in the morning. Louise Minchin will be channelling her inner Vicky McClure but I failed to harness the uncompromising look of Martin Compston.”

Referring the BBC series he added: “Remember if Hastings turns out to be a mole I’m out.”

Dan, who shared an identical post on Twitter, received a message from his co-host, Louise, who insisted he needed to work on his pose.

She said: “You need to work on your hard stare! No spoilers tomorrow I need sleep so I can’t watch.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
