Dan Walker: BBC host fascinated by snack revelation during election road trip to Ireland

Dan Walker, 43, let his social media followers know that aside from the general election road trip that he and other members of the BBC Breakfast team were on, he was heading up his own little investigation into Irish crisps, Taytos. And, he was fascinated by his findings.

He shared with his followers on both Twitter and Instagram that he and his BBC co-workers were already enjoying the infamous Irish snack as they arrived in Northern Ireland.

And, fans went crazy for the admission.

The BBC team were headed to Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, where they chatted to various members of the public about their thoughts on the upcoming general election on December 12.

In view of his 596,200 Twitter followers, Dan posted: “Only just arrived in Northern Ireland for our #BBCBreakfast general election road trip from Enniskillen tomorrow and we are already on the taytos,” accompanied with a bunch of happy emojis and a photo of the iconic cheese and onion crisp packet.

Fans flocked under his tweet to share their agreement and pleasure that he was enjoying the native snack, while welcoming him to Ireland.

One fan announced: “Crisp of the gods.”

Another said: “Fabulous packet of crisps”

“Best crisps in the world Dan. Fill your suitcase and every BBC equipment box!” A third suggested.

A fourth quipped: “And you picked the best flavour there is @mrdanwalker, although Tayto Worcester sauce is a very close second, see if you can try them next!”

“I’m learning from our taxi driver Stevie that there is a TAYTO in Northern Ireland and another / different one for the south. This is a crisp education #CrispNews,” he posted underneath his original tweet.

The revelation comes after some fans were quick to pick up that the BBC favourite had accidentally tagged the Southern Irish Tayto company instead of the Northern one, in his post.

The divide is apparently so significant that the Northern Irish branch of the company took a sole trader to court for selling the Republic’s brand to shops and pubs north of the border, the Irish News reported.

So, viewers felt it imperative to make sure the host had all his facts right.

And, after BBC Breakfast had finished filming their exclusive from Enniskillen, Dan posted yet another photo to his Twitter – this time, with multiple bags from both North and South regions.

These gifts supposedly came from guests who wanted to contribute to Dan’s crisp education after seeing his previous tweets.

It seems as though Dan is now on his way to becoming a crisp connoisseur, after his examination revealed all there is to know about the segregation between the two Irish brands.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC.
