Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast host taunts GMB as viewing figures revealed

Dan Walker, 42, made a sly dig at BBC Breakfast’s competition yesterday morning as their viewing figures were unveiled.

The BBC show revealed they had a “huge” number of people tune in on Wednesday with a whopping 46 percent share and more than two million viewers watching.

The guests on Wednesday included footballing legend Peter Crouch, world champion athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dame Mary Peters.

“Busy few days ahead,” Dan tweeted to his 581,100 Twitter followers: “Thanks so much for watching. We all love working on #BBCBreakfast. Nearly half of everyone watching TV… is watching us.”

Dan had a pop at rival breakfast show Good Morning Britain: “For those interested, next best at 21%.”

Fans of BBC Breakfast were more than pleased for the team as they flocked to give their congratulations.

“No contest – quality always wins,” one user commented.

Another gushed: “Oooh I won’t miss my Dishy Dan in the morning.”

A third admitted: “You know I have to admit to drifting across to the ‘other side’ but after about five minutes or less of listening to shouty face ruin another interview I’m straight back over to the calmness of BBC Breakfast. Keep up the good work.”

Others took an opportunity to slam the ITV opposition, keen to let GMB host Piers Morgan know they backed the BBC show.

“Let’s face it, the alternative is unwatchable,” one commented.

Another said: “Beaten hands down again Mr Morgan. People prefer facts, not rants.”

“Although I feel you sometimes restrict your reporting and come across bias. I would rather watch you and Louise than @piersmorgan any day, he’s just rude and lacking in morals!” A third stated.

This isn’t the first time the hosts have taken a jab at each other in the battle of the breakfast shows.

Fans may remember the competitive rivalry turned rather bitter a couple of years ago, when in December 2017, Piers took a hammer to a BBC Breakfast mug.

And, earlier this year the outspoken host made public that his aim is to “destroy” the BBC show.

The two anchors have engaged in many verbal spats on Twitter over TV ratings, the subject of their last feud.

Each show has a huge followings but it seems BBC Breakfast beat ITV to the cut again in terms of popularity.

Last Christmas Piers boasted that GMB was up in the ranks since Dan joined the BBC show, but the BBC presenter didn’t let Piers have the last laugh: “I’ll send your silver medal for Christmas,” he replied after taunting him with suggestions that ITV advertise “like there’s no tomorrow”.

It look like Piers will once again be eating humble pie as BBC continue to rocket up the ratings ladder.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
