Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast host pokes fun at Mike Bushell’s 'cowboy' Strictly routine

Dan, who appeared recently on ITV’s The Chase, posted his views to his twitter account after the show. He wrote: “Cowboy Bushell has made me feel a lot better about my appearance on ITV’s the Chase tonight”. He added: “You have a beautiful smile” from Shirley Ballas. Well done @mikebreakfast.

“Roll on week 3.”

The tweet garnered 17 tweets and 708 likes.

Mike was dancing with his partner Katya Jones.

Dressed in cowboy outfits, the pair danced an American Smooth to Rhinestone Cowboy.

The 53-year-old sports presenter carried out a number of daring lifts with his 30-year-old Russian partner.

The audience was left on tenterhooks during the routine, as at various times Mike looked close to dropping Katya.

To the huge relief of everyone, they made it through unscathed, with host Tessa Daly declaring that it was “a very brave routine” to attempt in just two weeks.

Judge Motsi Mabuse observed wryly that the pair must have had “a lot of trust” in each other, while Shirley Ballas contented herself with commenting on Mike’s “beautiful smile” while refraining from passing judgement on the dance.

Bruno Tonioli joked that Mike and Katya should concentrate more on dancing next time round and advised them not to “go for full horror”, while the ever scathing Craig Hevel Horwood said simply: “Odd, darling, very, very odd. That’s all I can say.”

Some viewers spotted that Katya was still wearing her wedding ring, despite having recently split from her husband Neil Jones.

The pair had married in 2013, but their relationship hit the rocks after Katya and her 2018 partner, stand-up comedian Sean Walsh, were pictured kissing in the street outside a London pub.

Katy and Neil had formed a very successful professional dance partnership, winning the World Professional Latin Showdance Championships in 2015, as well as being four times the undefeated British National Professional Champions.

They confirmed their break-up on Instagram in August.

In a joint statement, they wrote: “Hi everyone. As our fans and loyal supporters, you are really important to us and so we wanted to let you know some news. After 11 years we have made the mutual decision to separate.

“We will always love each other, just in a different way as friends. This will never change what a great team we make and we are really proud of everything we have achieved together.

“Our shared love of dance means we will keep working and dancing together as well as exploring individual projects. No matter what we do we will always support and respect each other.

“We wish one another every happiness and we will remain the best of friends. We are really looking forward to getting back to the ballroom and can’t wait to keep on dancing. Lots of love from us both.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
