Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast host addresses 'incident' with Prince Philip: 'I got told off!'

Dan Walker has been keeping himself busy during the lockdown period writing his new book Remarkable People, as well as presenting BBC Breakfast and Football Focus. The golf-enthusiast has since dished on a moment he shared with the Duke of Edinburgh where he admittedly got “told off”.

The 43-year-old TV anchor spoke candidly about an “incident” he suffered after coming face-to-face with Prince Philip.

Dan was giving a speech at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards – a programme geared towards young people to develop their interests and talents.

The broadcaster has addressed the moment which “didn’t go down too well” with the royal.

Dan explained: “I’ve met all of the royal family but I got told off. I had an incident with the Duke of Edinburgh once.

He continued: “Steve Bruce had just pulled out as a guest [on Football Focus] so I said to the Duke, ‘Actually, Steve Bruce has pulled out so if you’re free this Saturday there’s spot on the sofa if you want it.’

“And his aid sort of waved him on and said to me, ‘One doesn’t speak to the Duke like that.’

“Not my finest moment. But I have been invited back to the [Duke of Edinburgh Awards] so it can’t have been that bad.”

Meanwhile, Dan has released his new book Remarkable: Extraordinary Stories of Everyday Lives where he recounts inspiring stories of people that he has met throughout his long-standing career.

The presenter shines a light on those people who have shown selflessness and provided courage, even during challenging times.

Dan has explained that he hopes the heartfelt book will “uplift” people.

He said: “I just hope – particularly after this year – the things people in the book have learnt as well as the lessons they’ve learned and what I’ve learnt by process of osmosis, that everyone who reads it will learn those same things.

“To open your eyes to grief and to heartache. Hopefully, every chapter is uplifting.”

Remarkable People: Extrordinary Stories of Everyday Lives is available for purchase now.
