Christopher’s manager confirmed his death in a statement to Deadline, explaining that his wife Elaine was by his side when he died.

‘Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humour and the music of words,’ it read.

‘He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots.  ‘Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come.

‘He will forever be with us.’

Piers Morgan was among the first to offer a tribute to Christopher, sharing a sweet message on Twitter.

Alongside snaps from his screen moments, he wrote: ‘RIP Christopher Plummer, 91. Sound of Music star and a wonderful actor. Sad news.’

While Chris Evans, who shared the screen with Christopher in Knives Out, tweeted: ‘This is truly heartbreaking. What an unbelievable loss.

‘Few careers have such longevity and impact. One of my favourite memories from Knives Out was playing piano together in the Thrombey house between set ups.

‘He was a lovely man and a legendary talent.’
