Dakota Johnson presents award to former stepdad Antonio Banderas at Hollywood Film Awards


He was her stepfather for the best part of two decades.

And Dakota Johnson revealed she still calls Antonio Banderas Papi, as she presented him with the Best Actor gong at the Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday.

The 30-year-old actress shed tears as she talked about the happy homelife she once shared with Antonio, and seeing his ‘pure passion’ as an actor in films such as Zorro, El Mariachi and Puss In Boots.

‘It was the most fun a kid could have, she said. ‘We had Shrek swag coming out of our ears. We loved every second of it.’

Banderas thanked her for calling him Papi.

‘She still calls me Papi, And I love that, you have no idea, he said.’

And he paid tribute to Melanie, from whom he was wed from 1996 to 2015.

‘We had 20 years of family life that was beautiful, but the best is still to come,’ said the star, who brought along the couple’s daughter Stella, 23, as his guest.

The 59-year-old also addressed Stella, saying: ‘No matter how many movies, or stage productions, you have been my best production.’

The ’80s chic jumpsuit featured padded shoulders, wide lapels and a black leather belt. 

She completed the look with a pair of strappy black six-inch stilettos, revealing a black pedicure with a matching manicure.   

Banderas wore a classic black suit with a white shirt, a skinny black necktie and a pair of black leather dress shoes.  

Stella wore a velvet crimson pantsuit with a matching clutch.

Banderas also brought girlfriend Nicole Kimpel, stunned in a black dress, which featured a halter turtleneck and a sheer skirt with multicolored sequined lines.

Johnson honored Banderas at the event with the Hollywood Actor Award for his performance in the Pedro Almodóvar film Pain and Glory.   

In an interview with Vulture, he credited the director with introducing him to Stella and Johnson’s mother and his ex-wife Melanie Griffith in 1989. 

He added: ‘She is probably one of my best friends, if not the best friend that I have. My family is there, Dakota [Johnson], Little Estella and Alexander [Bauer].’

Banderas later began dating Griffith in 1995 on the set of their romantic comedy Two Much.

They married in May of 1996, before giving birth to Stella that September and ultimately divorcing in 2015.

Johnson and Stella were both featured onscreen with their mom in the 1999 film Crazy in Alabama, which was also Banderas’ directorial debut.   

In Pain and Glory, Banderas plays film director Salvador Mallo, who reflects on the choices he’s made in his life.

Banderas has already won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in film, his fifth with Almodóvar.
