Cyberpunk 2077 release date, gameplay, platforms, trailers and more

Even before the huge success of The Witcher 3 back in 2015, developers’ CD Projekt Red was hard at work on brand-new IP Cyberpunk 2077, an open-world RPG set in a sci-fi inspired future. The game was initially announced back in 2013 and nobody heard anything about it until January 2018, when the game’s official Twitter account tweeted a single word.

Gamescom 2018 saw the reveal of brand new screenshots, but the biggest news came days later; the reveal of a 48-minute gameplay walkthrough, which you can watch in all its’ glory at the top of this page.

When will Cyberpunk 2077 be released?

Of course, the biggest question is “when will Cyberpunk 2077 be released?” and sadly, that question looks like it’ll stay unanswered for the foreseeable future. You see, developers’ CD Projekt Red isn’t known for rushing the development of its games, and as such, there’s no solid release date. The answer we keep getting is ‘when it’s ready’, which is one we both love and hate at the same time.

The developers have previously stated that there’s a release target of 2019 at the very least, so while we may get to play Cyberpunk 2077 this year, chances are we may have to wait a little longer.

Whatever the case, we should know more at E3 2019. CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed at the company’s 2018 financial results that the company would be at E3 2019 in a big way. “Last year’s E3 has been the most important one so far throughout the whole CD Projekt history. But this year’s is going to be the most important one ever for us. We have really prepared a strong show.”

We expect to see more gameplay and finally find out when we’ll be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 for ourselves.

Which platforms will Cyberpunk 2077 be available for?

In terms of platforms, we expect Cyberpunk 2077 to be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC as well as offering support for 4K gameplay via the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

While some may be holding out hope that the upcoming title will somehow make it to the Nintendo Switch, we don’t feel as confident; CDPR develops incredibly detailed, complex and gorgeous games, and going by the quality of 2015’s The Witcher 3, we can’t imagine that the Switch will be able to power it.

With that being said, we’ll update this section once the developers confirm Cyberpunk 2077 platform support.

What should I expect from Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay?

Gameplay is one area of Cyberpunk 2077 that has got the entire internet guessing – and that’s because until recently, there wasn’t much in the way of information online, only gossip and rumours.

For those completely unaware, Cyberpunk 2077 is a new IP from the developers of the Witcher series. Cyberpunk 2077 is set in an open world known as Night City; a bright, neon sci-fi-inspired metropolis whose residents communicate with one another in a variety of foreign languages. While details are scarce, we imagine that we’ll be learning the ways of the city while trying to grasp the languages utilised by its residents to discover strange, dangerous conspiracies.

The developers have taken to Twitter to calm fans nerves about what to expect from the game. “Worry not” the devs tweeted. “We leave greed to others.”

It’s not the only time that CD Projekt Red has lifted the veil on its upcoming project, either. According to the developers, Cyberpunk 2077 will be considerably ‘wider’ than The Witcher 3, offering a range of environments to explore, treasures to find, unique quests and NPCs, and it sounds like there will be a lot of violence too.

It’s said that the player will be able to obtain and level up a series of skills, abilities and enhancements to improve gameplay and add new mechanics. This can include, for example, the ability to communicate with the NPC residents of Night City using Braindance, a handy digital recording device.

Speaking at Pareto Securities’ Gaming Seminar, CD Projekt RED CEO Adam Kicinski claimed that Cyberpunk 2077 “is our new Witcher 3, but even more ambitious.”

“We work [in a] new universe, futuristic universe. We believe it’s very appealing to players, not only RPG players—but this is [a] true RPG, like Witcher, like Witcher 3, for mature audiences. It’s handcrafted, detailed, of course open-world, with open-ended gameplay,” he said.
