CW moves up superhero food chain with 'Superman & Lois' series in development

Superman could be flying back to TV as a superhero who’s also dealing with the life challenges mere mortals face.

CW is developing “Superman & Lois” as a series featuring Tyler Hoechlin, who has played the Man of Steel on “Supergirl” and other CW superhero shows, and Elizabeth Tulloch, who played reporter Lois Lane in last year’s superhero crossover event.

From the show’s description, it appears Superman will need more than his superpowers to deal with everyday challenges — he and Lois are parents.

“The world’s most famous super hero and comic books’ most famous journalist deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society,” according to the description.

Superhero rankings: Every DC superhero movie (including ‘Shazam!’), definitively ranked

CW had the final years of “Smallville,” a long-running series (2001-2011) that started on its network predecessor, WB, and focused on Superman’s youthful years. ABC had a Superman series in the 1990s: “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.”

The show would be produced by Greg Berlanti Productions, which oversees CW’s other superhero offerings, and Warner Bros. Television. Todd Helbing will be the writer and executive producer.

With a Superman series, CW would move into the top tier of DC Comics’ superheroes. It has enjoyed success with “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl” and shows featuring other DC heroes, but Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have primarily been the province of Warner Bros.’ film side.
