Cult classic NieR remaster announced, NieR:Automata coming to Xbox Game Pass

The original NieR game is getting remastered for current consoles and PC, while NieR:Automata will be coming to Xbox Game Pass.

A unique blend of role-playing and PlatinumGames style action title, NieR:Automata was undeniably one of the best games of 2017.

It’s been quite the success story too, considering the original NieR’s middling sales and critical response. But Square Enix has decided to give that first game another shot with a remaster.

Announced as part of NieR’s 10th anniversary celebrations, a teaser trailer was released over the weekend. It doesn’t show any gameplay but certainly helps set a similarly melancholy mood to that of Automata.

One
important thing to note is that, according to the trailer, this remaster will
apparently be of NieR Replicant. When NieR first released, there were two
different versions released in Japan.

The version we in the West got (simply called NieR over here) was called NieR Gestalt in Japan and saw the title hero as a single father looking after his daughter.

NieR Replicant, which was a Japanese PlayStation 3 exclusive, instead had Nier as a brother caring for his little sister.

Aside from this difference, both games had the same gameplay and plot as Nier sets out to cure his daughter/sister of a deadly disease. Whether the Gestalt version will be remastered as well, or be included as an option, is unknown at this point.

Platinum won’t be involved with the remaster, however, which is a bit of a shame as NieR’s combat is one of the areas that needed the most improvement.

It’s also been confirmed that NieR:Automata will be coming to Xbox Game Pass on 2 April. Since it was the only one released on Xbox One, it will be the the Become As Gods Edition, which includes all the DLC that was released for the PlayStation 4 version.

The NieR news doesn’t stop there either. A brand new smartphone title was also announced, in the form of NieR: Reincarnation. It is coming to iOS and Android devices as a free-to-play game and is being developed by Applibot, who… we’ve never heard of before.

The NieR remaster will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
