Illusionist Criss Angel has given fans an update on his son, Johnny Crisstopher’s ongoing battle with cancer amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Las Vegas magician, 52, revealed that the family have to be extra careful to avoid germs anyway so Johnny Crisstopher, six, doesn’t pick up a bug where his treatment has affected his immunity, so have been shielding amid the pandemic.

He opened up to Extra about how the family’s lives have changed, explaining: ‘Kids that are going through paediatric cancer obviously have the challenge of dealing with that but when you underscore that with the pandemic, it’s really a double threat.

‘Families that have gone through paediatric cancer have been practising hand washing, hand sanitising, sanitising areas when you go out to eat in a restaurant and social distancing.

‘Because usually your child has immune-system deficiencies, and for Johnny Crisstopher and other children going through what he’s going through, it can be dire – life-threatening.’

Criss added that the family have been staying in their home except for hospital appointments, revealing: ‘For the most part we’ve been hunkering down at home and doing the quarantine thing because we don’t want to take any chances with our son, except for when he goes to the hospital to do a blood transfusion or to Cure 4 The Kids here in Vegas two to three times a week.

‘We’ve been really spending a lot of time [together as a] family. We’re trying to make the most of the situation and trying to provide incredible memories for Johnny Crisstopher and our other son, Xristos Yanni, [17 months].

‘So when they get older they can think about these times that were challenging, but we made something positive come from it: memories.’

Criss and his wife, Shaunyl Benson, have been isolating in their Las Vegas home with their children throughout the pandemic.

Johnny was first diagnosed with leukaemia in 2015 and was briefly in remission before Criss revealed the cancer had returned in December.
