What’s Halloween without a bit of Scream?

Scream 5 has aptly started filming during the spookiest season, and Courteney Cox has been pictured on location as she returns to the role of Gale Weathers.

The Friends star was seen on set in Wilmington, North Carolina, as filming on the hotly anticipated horror sequel kicked off.

Courteney, 56, wore a statement scarlet suit and matching heels, and crew were pictured around her wearing face masks for safety.

It seems that Gale is back chasing a story, as yellow police tape was seen winding through the trees.

These are the first pictures from the set of Scream 5, which will be released in early 2022.

Courteney’s involvement was confirmed in July, with directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, as well as executive producer Chad Villela, saying in a statement: ‘We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney.

‘We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!’

Courteney played the feisty journalist in all four Scream films, and Gale has so far evaded the wrath of Ghostface.

And it’s not just Courteney who is back for the franchise’s latest installment, as her ex-husband David Arquette is back as Sheriff Dewey Riley, and scream queen Neve Campbell is reprising the role of Sidney Prescott.

Marley Shelton is also back to play Judy Hicks, after first appearing as the Deputy Sheriff of Woodsboro in 2011’s Scream 4, while Roger L Jackson will return as the voice of Ghostface.

Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid and Melissa Barrera are among the new additions to the cast.

We don’t know just yet what the plot is, but we can guess that Sidney will be terrorised by a new villain hiding under the guise of Ghostface as she returns to Woodsboro.

Scream 5 will be the first of the franchise not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

The franchise began back in 1996 with the groundbreaking Scream, in which Sidney became the target of a killer in a ghost mask on the anniversary of her mother’s murder.

Ready Or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the reboot from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Scream 5 is set for release on January 14, 2022.
