Countryfile viewers in uproar over 'horrific' fox snaring segment: 'Unbelievable'

Of the legitimate use of the control method, the website states: “In all parts of the UK, snares may be set to catch foxes, rabbits and brown hares, provided you are the landowner or have the landowner’s permission.

“(You can also legally snare a few other species such as rats and mink, though we would generally advocate other methods for controlling these species.)”

Giving his explanation on the future of snaring Mr Evans added: “If the cover is this high and I’ve got vulnerable birds in that area, I can not physically see a fox to shoot it, but I can set a snare the right location for a short period of time, catch that fox and address the problem.

“I think that when snares are run to the highest standard in accordance with the relevant codes of practice, they’re legitimate, humane and a vital tool for land management.”

Countryfile continues Sunday at 6pm on BBC One.
