Countdown star Rachel Riley has revealed that she secretly met with Twitter before their decision to suspend Katie Hopkins from the social media platform.

It’s emerged this week that Katie, 44, has had her Twitter account temporarily locked as they conduct an investigation into her tweets.

Although her account is still available, a message reads: ‘This tweet is no longer available because it violated the Twitter Rules.’

It has not been specified what led to the suspension.

Rachel, 34, applauded the move and revealed how she was partly behind Twitter’s decision after meeting up with the company to discuss activity on Katie and George Galloway’s respective accounts.

The TV star told her 654,000 followers: ‘I met with @Twitter yesterday with @imi_ahmed from @CCDHate and asked them among other things to review George Galloway & Katie Hopkins’s presence on their platform.

‘I am pleased to see that action appears to have been taken!’

She added: ‘This is what happens when they have the #WillToAct.’

A campaign was also launched by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, who said they also had discussions with Twitter.

In a statement, they called for further action against Katie’s Twitter and said: ‘We hope they now remove her from their platform and continue to demonstrate the will to act.

‘There is a long road ahead before social media is made safe for dialogue, information exchange and the formation and maintenance of relationships.

‘The fact parents are so hesitant and fearful of allowing children on to social media platforms shows how toxic many of these environments have become.’

They added: ‘We believe social media can empower the world to be even better, but handing megaphones to hate actors is irresponsible and dangerous.’

Addressing their investigation into Katie’s account, Twitter explained: ‘Keeping Twitter safe is a top priority for us – abuse and harassment have no place on the service.

‘We take enforcement action against any account that is violative of our rules – which includes violations of our hateful conduct policy and abusive behaviour policy.

‘These rules apply to everyone using our service – regardless of the account involved.’

Last year, Little Mix star Jesy Nelson released her emotional documentary, The Odd One Out, which won a National Television Award this week and featured an insensitive tweet from Katie about the popstar’s weight.

Katie tweeted back in 2013: ‘Packet Mix have still got a chubbier in their ranks. Less Little Mix. More Pick n Mix,’ prompting her to receive backlash from fans of the singer.
