What coronavirus does to the body

Viruses work by getting inside the cells of the body is made of and then hijacks them. It first infects the cells lining the throat, airways and lungs and turns them into “coronavirus factories” which spew out huge numbers of new viruses that go on to infect more.

Body aches, sore throat and a headache are all common at this stage.

The fever, and generally a feeling of the body feeling grotty is due to the immune system responding to this new infection.

The immune system has recognised the virus as a hostile invader and signals to the rest of the body that something is wrong by releasing chemicals knowns as cytokines.

These rally the immune system, however, they also cause body aches, pain and fever.
