Liverpool are set to be named Premier League champions even if the season grinds to a halt amid growing fears over the spread of coronavirus.
The English football season has been postponed until early April but could take an even longer break if authorities see fit.
There is no regulation in place which outlines what would happen were the 2019/20 season to be ended early which has caused concern among those who have plenty riding on the current campaign.
Liverpool would perhaps be the most affected club in the country as they bid to end a 30-year wait for the title.
But, according to the Telegraph , a senior club executive has said there is little objection to the Reds being awarded the crown regardless of whether or not the season ends early.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are within two wins of a first Premier League title such is their 25-point lead at the summit.
They have dropped just five points this term but Klopp has regularly stated that football is secondary to the wellbeing of the world’s population.
“Today, football and football matches really aren’t important at all,” he said.
“First and foremost, all of us have to do whatever we can to protect one another. In society I mean. This should be the case all the time in life, but in this moment I think it matters more than ever.
“I’ve said before that football always seems the most important of the least important things. Of course, we don’t want games or competitions suspended, but if doing so helps one individual stay healthy – just one – we do it no questions asked.
“If it’s a choice between football and the good of the wider society, it’s no contest. Really, it isn’t.
“Today’s decision and announcement is being implemented with the motive of keeping people safe. Because of that we support it completely.”
