Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill QUITS role as Robert Preston

Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill, who plays Robert Preston, has announced he is quitting the soap and will be leaving this year.

The Coronation Street cast member has been on the soap for four years, and has been married to both Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) and Carla Connor (Alison King) during his tenure.

He posted on social media: “Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the time has come for me to hang up the chef’s gear and head for pastures new.

“There is still a lot of drama & shenanigans to come for Robert but I will be leaving @itvcorrie later in the year.”

Tristan, 51, took over the role of Robert in 2015 from original actor Julian Kay.

The character had been off-screen for 12 years and came back for a romance with Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh), who had just split from Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson).

Tristan’s announcement has devastated his fans, as they rushed to his post to wish him luck in the future.

One posted: “That’s very sad news you’ve been a great addition to Corrie over the years a very talented actor you will be sorely missed. Good Luck for your new venture.”

Another added: “You have been amazing and a pleasure to watch. Gutted you’ll be leaving but wishing you all the best in your next adventure.”

A third chipped in: “Best of wishes for the future but very sorry to hear you’re leaving the street.”

Tristan’s exit comes after Kym also revealed she will be leaving Corrie after 13 years, and will also be leavinf later this year.

Could the pair be leaving the cobbles together?

Corrie continues on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
