Speaking with press, including Express.co.uk, the soap boss said: “There’s a brilliant story for Rita that’s quite small and domestic but really heartbreaking and showcases Barbara Knox’s undoubted talents.
“It’s not a story really that’s most about her being in physical peril, it’s about an emotional story for her around Christmas.”
Of what’s beyond the disaster, Iain added: “She’ll be ok physically, but it will have slightly more far-reaching consequences in terms of her perception of her own life and her role in the world and her role on Coronation Street.
“That will play out over the first couple of months of next year, culminating around February time.”
