Corbyn hints at 2nd referendum for FIRST time as Brexit Party CRUSH Labour in EU poll


The Labour leader said in a statement the Brexit question “will have to go back to the people”. Jeremy Corbyn said in his latest statement the European elections have been used as a “proxy second referendum”. The Labour Party has faced huge losses so far as Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party picks up a huge section of the votes.

Mr Corbyn said: ”After three years of Tory failure to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole country, these elections became a proxy second referendum.

“With the Conservatives disintegrating and unable to govern, and parliament deadlocked, this issue will have to go back to the people, whether through a general election or a public vote.

“Labour will bring our divided country together so we can end austerity and tackle inequality.

“Over the coming days we will have conversations across our party and movement, and reflect on these results on both sides of the Brexit divide.

“We will not let the continuing chaos in the Conservative Party push our country into a No Deal exit from the EU.

“Parliament can and will prevent such a damaging outcome for jobs and industry in the UK.”

The Labour Party were humiliated in both London and Wales and the Brexit Party gained 30 percent of both votes.

The Liberal Democrats claimed the top spot in Islington, where Mr Corbyn and shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry have Westminster seats.

The embarrassing result for Labour saw them claim 19,017 votes compared with 19,890 for the Liberal Democrats.

Labour MP Margaret Hodge tweeted: “Second place in Lewisham, Haringey, Camden & Lambeth. Third in Barnet.

“We can’t take our support for granted. Without a clear position on Brexit even many Labour strongholds will abandon us. Plain and simple.”

The Liberal Democrats have won 9 seats so far as the Brexit Party gain 18 seats.
