Constance Wu softens tone after unhappy tweets right after ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ renewal

Most stars are thrilled when their TV shows are picked up for another season. Constance Wu didn’t appear to be one of them — at least for a couple of hours Tuesday.

The star of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” issued two unhappy tweets, each underlined with an expletive, starting less than an hour after the comedy was renewed for a sixth season by ABC Friday. “Boat” had been considered a “bubble” show, one whose fate is up in the air.

Wu had a change of heart a couple of hours later, sending another tweet expressing her gratitude for the renewal and pride in working on the show.

It’s not clear what upset Wu, who in the last year drew praise and a Golden Globe nomination for “Crazy Rich Asians,” a box-office hit. USA TODAY has requested comment from her publicist.

Wu’s first tweet, sent less than an hour after the renewal news broke, said, “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. (Expletive)”.

About 15 minutes later, she sent a shorter follow-up tweet: “(Expletive) hell.”

As Wu received a mix of both shocked and supportive responses, including some speculating that the renewal may impede her blossoming film career, she tweeted that she wasn’t on “a rampage,” just that she frequently uses that expletive.

She continued: “Y’all are making a lot of assumptions about what I was saying. And no, it’s not what it’s about. No it’s not..what this is all about. Stop assuming.”

The Hollywood Reporter and Variety report that Wu had also commented “Dislike” on her show’s Instagram post announcing: “Fresh Off the Boat Is Back For Season 6!”

As the business day closed in Los Angeles Friday Wu shifted gears again, explaining the earlier messages came on “the heels of rough day&were ill timed w/the news of the show. Plz know, Im so grateful for FOTB renewal. I love the cast&crew. Im proud to be a part of it. For all the fans support, thank u.”
