Conor McGregor 'needs to fight or go away' says Justin Gaethje

Justin Gaethje says he has tried “every route there is” to set up a clash with Conor McGregor , telling the Irishman he “either needs to go away or fight”.

McGregor is expected to fight either Gaethje or Dustin Poirier next as he targets his first UFC win for three years.

The Irishman has been tipped to make his return to the octagon in early 2020 – but Gaethje says he has been trying to tie him down for months without success.

And Gaethje described recent talk of a McGregor match-up with Frankie Edgar is “a slap in the face”.

“He keeps tweeting he’s gonna fight,” said the American in an interview with TMZ Sports .

“On Planet Earth, there’s two people that will possibly fight him – me or Dustin Poirier. He either needs to go away or fight, and it’s me or Dustin.”

He added: “I wrote him a message like f**king seven months ago just trying to be his friend.

“I’ve tried every route. I’m trying reverse psychology. I’m trying to be his friend.

“I’m trying every f**king route that there is to draw this man out. And I can’t draw him out.

“And he’s calling out Frankie Edgar. So, it’s a slap in the face to me, to other lightweights, and to really the standard that we do here.”

McGregor said in August he had been calling out Gaethje for a fight in July, but had to shelve those plans after suffering a hand injury in a sparring session.

Poirier this week claimed he is fighting McGregor next , while the Dubliner’s trainer John Kavanagh last week suggested Edgar would be the perfect comeback opponent for his fighter.

McGregor has not fought since he was choked out by lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov last October.
