Cocaine Hippos may be the wildest Netflix film of 2020

So, we don’t want to make any rash judgements seeing as we’re not even in the third month of the year, but Cocaine Hippos may be the wildest Netflix film of 2020.

There, we said it.

Picture the premise – you’re Pablo Escobar and you’ve got a menagerie of animals at your Colombian estate to make things look all sorts of exotic in the 1980s.

Including hippopotamuses shipped over from Africa.

Because you’re flippin’ Pablo Escobar.

But then you’re killed in 1993 and all your animals are sent to zoos – bar the hippos, who are left to their own devices and, in turn, become an invasive species after populating the area.

Well, that was all something that actually went down nearly three decades ago and Cocaine Hippos, penned by Jordan VanDina, will follow a group of friends who stumble across a clue leading to the drug kingpin’s apparent lost treasure (not sure if that’ ones a fictional addition though…).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, they then embark on a wild trip that pits them against con men, local drug lords and the aforementioned, apparently deadly hippos that Pablo smuggled into Colombia.

And Netflix saw that and thought, ‘oh that’s a bit of me’ as the streamer reportedly picked up the comedy package.

It may come as no real surprise it has been described as a mash-up between The Hangover and Tropic thunder, with Jermaine Fowler set to star.

VanDina responded to the news Netflix had signed off on his project, as he shared the exciting announcement on Twitter this week.

‘Hey!!! I wrote an insane movie about hippos and cocaine!!!!’ he wrote. ‘What a time to be alive!!’

What a time to be alive, indeed.

He later added: ‘If my only legacy in Hollywood is writing a movie called Cocaine Hippos before I have to move back to Ronkonkoma Long Island, I’m okay with that.’
