Climate change shock: Huge mirrors in space could halt global warning

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who founded Venture For America – an organisation which recruits college graduates to work in startup industries across the US – has some wild plans to battle climate change, if he gets in to power in 2020. Mr Yang is running for the Democratic bid in the States and is hoping to turn the planet’s climate crisis on his head if he succeeds Donald Trump in the White House. In his climate proposal, Mr Yang said climate change is an “existential threat” and said that “our planet is a mess”.

One of the proposals the 44-year-old is putting forward is to scatter and burn sulphur in the atmosphere.

By doing this it would mimic the conditions of a volcanic eruption, where the sulphuric particles reflect some of the sunlight.

Mr Yang outlined in his proposal: Stratosphere aerosol scattering would be a drastic response to the climate crisis.

He said: “When volcanoes erupt, they spew sulphur dioxide into the sky and reflect sunlight particles away from the earth.

“If scientists can find a way to burn sulphur in the stratosphere, then they could mimic the positive effects of volcanoes eruptions on climate change and their ability to help keep the earth cool.”

Another option Mr Yang claimed would work is by placing thousands of mirrors in Earth’s orbit.

This would essentially have the same effect as sulphuric particles in the atmosphere, as it too would push sunlight away.

Mr Yang said: “Space mirrors would involve launching giant foldable mirrors into space that would deploy and reflect much of the sun’s light.

Mr Yang believes this is necessary to offset the impact of automation, which could produce large scale job losses.

According to RealClearPolitics, Mr Yang is currently polling in eighth place with 2.1 percent in the Democratic presidential primary.

Fellow businessman Elon Musk has recently given Mr Yang his backing for the presidency, writing on Twitter: “I support Yang”

He added in a later tongue-in-cheek tweet: “He would be our first openly goth president. I think this is very important.”
