Class review: Vinyasa Foundations workshop, Sadhana Wellbeing and Yoga studio, Dalston

When and where?

Dalston’s Sadhana Yoga & Wellbeing studio, every Tuesday at 6pm.

What’s the drill?

An hour-long class covering the basics of alignment, form and safety in Vinyasa yoga (instructor Beth throws in advice for any other yoga you might be practising). At only £5, this drop-in class is perfect for cash-strapped amateur yogis intent on improving their practice without breaking the bank. Poses are broken down and taught step by step, and there’s also a focus on mindful breathing to alleviate post-work stress. The class rotates its focus weekly. The first week of the month is breathing, the second bends and twists, the third week the dreaded sun salutations. Go regularly or pick and choose what’s most beneficial for you.

Sweat count

Of course, yoga isn’t about burning calories, but this class is really helpful for anyone wanting to take their chaturangas and dolphin poses to a new level. It’s slow-paced, with a relaxed atmosphere, and questions are welcome.

The social network

The new-ish (launched last summer) Dalston Junction outpost of this popular Clapham studio has a calm atmosphere. The crowd is mixed and of varying abilities.

Instructor appeal

Beth is kind, attentive and focused on ensuring that you practise in a way that’s right for you. She takes you through each pose until you’re comfortable with the psychological and spiritual benefits as well as the physical.

What to pack

Your usual studio kit and water. Towels and mats can be hired for £1 each and there’s a padlock for your locker.

The sounds

Soothing yoga beats and, sometimes, silence.

Locker-room chat

Unusually for a neighbourhood yoga studio there are decent showers with nice toiletries, hairdryers and GHD straighteners.

Tips for first-timers

Arrive early if you want to maximise your mindfulness time.

The afterburn

There is nothing better than the burning desire to improve at yoga and practise the moves you’ve learned at home.
