Clarke and his pregnant partner appeared on the daytime TV programme to honour World Suicide Prevention Day.

Reflecting on his past issues and encouraging awareness on the topic, the retired footballer explained: ‘Everyone focuses on the tragedy as so many lives are torn apart.

‘For the amount of figures we see, they are people, who have families. We want to show that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. We can look forward to this pregnancy now with joy.’

Carrie also stressed the importance of not shifting the blame on the father of her children: ‘It was very scary. People have been so wonderful and kind to us. People asked me: ”How could he do that to you while you’re pregnant?”, but it’s not like that.
