City region deal units for SMEs get green light

More space for small companies to grow is being created in Fife after the local council granted planning permission for seven units to be built on the Dunnikier business park in Kirkcaldy.

The premises are being erected as part of the Industrial Innovation Investment Programme (IIIP), Fife’s flagship project under the £1.3 billion Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Deal, a 15-year effort by the UK and Scottish governments, local councils and universities to stimulate the region’s economy. The units will be fitted with solar panels and the council has promised more car parking spaces on the business park.

Fife’s IIIP aims to create 1,000 permanent jobs and nearly 600 temporary construction posts. Over the next two years, industrial premises will be built in Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Lochgelly, with a further two acres of land made available around Dalgety Bay and Dunfermline.

Neil Crooks, convener of Fife Council’s Kirkcaldy area committee, said: “This is a major economic opportunity for the businesses that will be able to expand into the new units. We know that demand in Kirkcaldy is strong for this type of Unit, so the emphasis is very much on getting these ready for tenants as quickly as possible.

“This is another important step forward in delivering the ten-year programme that will encourage more businesses to locate and grow within Fife and secure a further £30 million of investment by the private sector.”
