Chunky highlights is the 90s hair trend taking over Instagram

I remember when I was finally permitted by my mother to have highlights, I took a photograph of 90s icons, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, along with me as inspo.

Along with most of my peers, I was desperate to emulate the thick, stripy blonde and brunette highlights the twins made their signature in classic movies Passport to Paris, Holiday in the Sun and Winning London. Just me?

Since those heady days, chunky highlights have been replaced by softer techniques such as balayage, mid-lights and textural highlights but while (tragically) MK and A aren’t making a comeback, their signature hairstyle is.

“Fine woven wisps are out and bold, high contrast – a little bit 90s – chunky highlights are in,” proclaims Jason Hogan, Celebrity and Expert Colourist at Josh Wood Atelier.

“I love dimension in the hair, which can be lost by repeated balayage on the hair, this can be something muted like a baby blonde against a sandy blonde or something bolder for autumn like a rich chocolate base with bright pops of amber and butter blonde.”

To keep this looking expensive, Jason likes to see a transition in the shade of the highlight going from a deeper root into a brighter end. This, he says, gives a multi-faceted effect to the colour and stops it from looking stripy.

Jason says the same technique can be used on blondes that have become too solid or have hair lacking interest. “Chunky lowlights again muted or bolder to add depth and dimension back, transitioning from a deeper root to a lighter tip.” Noted.

Jason adds that the key to success between salon appointment is a glossing treatment in between colour services to keep the tone in check, keep the hair radiant and add strengthening proteins to it. “This should be done every 4 to 6 weeks, which would ideally be halfway between your colour appointments,” he suggests.

Now when are MK&A making their much-anticipated comeback?
