Christmas shoppers expected to spend £3 billion in Cyber Monday sprees

The Christmas spending frenzy kickstarted by Black Friday has surged through the weekend into Cyber Monday, according to latest figures.

The TopCashback deals website, which tracks spending at 5,000 retailers, said that by 8am today the number of people searching for discounts was up 31 per cent on last year.

The most popular five websites were Amazon, eBay, Currys PC World, Groupon and Debenhams.

There were also signs that high streets were busier than last year. Footfall, monitored by analysts ShopperTrax, was up six per cent on Black Friday and 6.8 per cent on Saturday.

Nick Pompa, of ShopperTrak, said: “The importance of the promotional event in driving in-store footfall extends not just across the Black Friday weekend itself, but also in building momentum into Christmas trading, as retailers extend their in-store promotion strategies.”

Total spending is estimated to reach about £3 billion today, with about half online and half in stores. The total could match or even surpass Black Friday’s figure.
