Christmas pay dates: Will you be paid before Christmas?

When it comes to Christmas, it can be hard to pick the very best thing about the season, from seeing your friends and family to the Christmas music to, of course, the presents.

But there are some parts of the festivities that can be trying – and for many that’s usually the cost of it all.

Some employers will change the way their employees get paid over the holidays so will you be getting paid before the big day?

Many employers will change the payday for December so that you have money to cover Christmas.

This is also in part because banks can’t process payments if your payday falls on one of the bank holidays at the end of December.

With Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday this year, it’s likely your employer will pay you before – on either 23 or 24 December.

Many might even pay you the week before, giving you enough money to get everything you might need.

People already have a high chance of going into debt over Christmas and an early payday could mean having to make one paycheque last up to six weeks – which might explain why most employees would prefer a bonus to a Christmas party.

With one in seven Brits worrying about money every day as they put Christmas on their credit cards, there are some useful resources out there for those looking to budget this festive season.

Universal Credit payments over Christmas

Universal Credit – which includes Housing Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker’s Allowance, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit and Income Support – payments will also be different over the Christmas period.
