Christian Pulisic reduced to tears after being substituted in USA's defeat to Canada

Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic couldn’t hide his frustrations after being substituted during the USA’s 2-0 defeat to Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League.

US boss Gregg Berhalter withdrew Pulisic after an hour of the clash in Toronto, in which Canada beat their neighbours for the first time in 34 years.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies gave the Canadians the lead shortly after Pulisic’s withdrawal, with substitute Lucas Cavallini wrapping up the win in stoppage time.

Berhalter would later claim that Pulisic had been suffering from “flu-like symptoms” and “a light fever” before the match, but the 21-year-old could be seen angrily telling his boss “I’m fine” as he sat on the bench looking distraught after the full-time whistle.

Prior to that Pulisic had looked angry to be replaced as he barely acknowledged Berhalter when leaving the field.

He then sat down on the bench and burst into tears.

Pulisic has only started three Premier League games for Chelsea since his £58million move from Borussia Dortmund was finalised in the summer, with suggestions that he has struggled to adapt to English football.

“Especially as Americans, we haven’t had a lot of top international talents throughout our years. If you’re not able to tune it out then it can be a weight on your shoulders.

“I think there are obstacles, I think not a lot of American players have really proved themselves in Europe and I think when you’re an American player and you’re trying to prove yourself amongst all these European guys or international guys that are top players who have played in these big competitions, not a whole lot of Americans have been there, it can be tough.”
