Christian Eriksen left out of Tottenham team to face Southampton as transfer to Inter Milan draws closer

Christian Eriksen’s move to Inter Milan looks all but certain after the 27-year-old was left out of the Tottenham squad to take on Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

The Danish midfielder’s future has been the subject of a huge amount of speculation ever since he announced his intention to move on from the club over the summer.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season Spurs appear willing to let him go early, and there are reports that a £16.7m fee with Inter has been agreed.

And with Eriksen’s name not announced in the squad which will take on the Saints this afternoon, it appears a foregone conclusion that he will move on.

Despite the rumours about his departure Eriksen has still been involved in the team in recent games, coming on as a substitute in the win against Norwich on Wednesday and the draw with Watford last weekend.

But his exclusion from Jose Mourinho’s most recent squad suggests he may already be on his way to Italy to sign a contract with the Serie A club.

He is expected to put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal worth £260,000 per week, with a further £60,000 dependent on bonuses.

Despite his poor form this season Eriksen contributed massively to Spurs during his seven-and-a-half years in north London, scoring 69 goals in 304 appearances in all competitions and helping the team qualify for the Champions League on four consecutive occasions.

Given Tottenham have signed Gedson Fernandes on loan, it is unlikely they will attempt to sign another midfielder this month.

Inter meanwhile are still in the market for players, even though Eriksen will be their third signing of this window.

Antonio Conte has already added ex- Chelsea colleague Victor Moses to his ranks, along with Ashley Young from Man Utd.

And he could raid his former club again before the window is out, after renewing interest in signing wantaway striker Olivier Giroud.
