Chris Hughes broke down in tears while talking about the abuse his girlfriend Jesy Nelson had suffered from trolls online.

Jesy opened up about the bullying in her highly praised documentary for the BBC earlier this year.

The Love Island star praised the Little Mix singer as ‘so strong’ in the face of such awful comments.

Chris became choked up while speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield live on This Morning today.

As they said he must be ‘so proud’ of Jesy, Chris said: ‘I get emotional every time I speak about it.’

Struggling to talk, he said the documentary ‘doesn’t just help people going through that struggle in life, it helps parents understand’.

Phil offered him a tissue to wipe his eyes, and Chris continued: ‘I struggle talking about it. I’m alright talking about myself but when I talk about anyone else I’m a mess.

‘She’s so brave, so strong, she didn’t deserve any of that.’

The reality TV star, who appeared on Love Island in 2017, previously came to Jesy’s defence, calling out professional controversy chaser Katie Hopkins over a tweet she posted in 2013 calling Jesy ‘chubby’.

Jesy said in her documentary that the tweet marked the point where her life started ‘spiralling out of control’.

Chris told Metro.co.uk back in October that he hoped to move with the Black Magic singer before thinking about starting a family.

Asked whether he had considered getting married to the star he told us: ‘We haven’t planned anything yet so we’re just enjoying life at the minute and seeing where it goes.’

This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
