Chris Evans: Virgin Radio host reveals heartbreaking details of mother's final letter

During his breakfast slot on Virgin Radio, Chris Evans revealed the contents of the final letter his mother left after passing away. The broadcaster joked about the letter, revealing that although he and mother had not spoken much about her funeral wishes, she knew exactly what she had wanted and slyly left it in a letter where she knew Chris would find it.

He said: “We did talk about how she wanted her funeral but it was awkward and upsetting for my mum.

“When she had finally died and we’d laid her to rest and when we’d said our goodbyes, with a very nice man called David who voted everything out – thank you David we’ll be forever in your debt.

“And, superset Noel Fitzpatrick was the celebrant at my mum’s funeral – if fixing dogs doesn’t work out he could always become a celebrity celebrant because he was so good at it.

“But then, of course, a few days later we found a letter that my mum had written and she had sorted everything out.

“She left it where she knew we’d find it while we were clearing her house, the sly old fox!

“So she’d done a bit of it already.”

His comment about his mum being a “sly old fox” made co-hosts laugh, as Chris also chuckled to himself on remembering his later mother.

Chris often opens up about his personal life and has recently spoken fondly of his mother who died last year aged 92.

Has part of his tribute, he said: “Good morning. The reason I’m not with you today is that just before I came on air my mum passed away and I needed to go straight back home to be with my family.

“But it’s all OK, in fact it’s very OK, mum needed to be at peace.

“Moreover she needed to be at peace for some time now and as she has throughout her life, in death she has brought us together. She was an incredible woman.

“Anyone who has ever met her will tell you that ultimately there was no battle lost, only a life won. Every single day. I’ll be back tomorrow.

“If mum had the first idea I might not have shown up today because of her she would have been furious.

“I hope you have a lovely Thursday. See you tomorrow.”

Chris Evans Virgin Radio Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6.30am.
