Children who do not drink water consume nearly 100 extra calories a day, researchers have found

US scientists analysed the consumption habits of 8,400 kids aged two to 19.

They found one in five never drank water and were likely to swig sugary fizz — raising their average daily calories by 93.

A third of British kids leave primary school too fat.

Dr Asher Rosinger of Penn State University said: “Kids should drink water every day.

“If not, probably they’ll drink sugary beverages. An extra 3,500 calories equals to 1lb of weight gain.

“In a month you could gain 1lb. Over several months, that adds up.”
