Childish Gambino shows off generous side as he gives away free shoes and premieres Guava Island at Coachella

Childish Gambino has shown off his generous side at Coachella as he’s been airdropping tokens for free shoes and premiering his new film with Rihanna, Guava Island.

We stan.

The rapper, actor, comedian, filmmaker (etc) – real name Donald Glover – had fans hyped when they realised he was airdropping tokens to collect a free pair of his unreleased Adidas shoes at the California festival.

‘Childish gambino airdropped a picture at coachella of his adidas collab and everyone who accepted got a pair of his unreleased shoes…’ one attendee wrote on Twitter, sharing a snap of the trainers.

The star’s new film Guava Island also premiered at the festival, with it being free to stream on Amazon Prime for 18 hours.

The movie, which also stars Rihanna, sees Donald’s character Deni using music to uplift the island. The singer stars as his girlfriend Kofi, while Black Panther’s Letitia Wright also makes an appearance. Did someone say dream team?

‘I’m really humbled having the opportunity to present something this timely and timeless,’ Glover said in a statement. ‘Between Rihanna and the people of Cuba, this is one of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on.’

Meanwhile, Donald blew fans away with his actual performance at the festival, also taking the opportunity to speak out about late rappers Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle, as well as his father, who also died this year.

‘I lost my dad this year, we lost Nipsey, we lost Mac,’ he said. ‘What I’m starting to realise is all we have is memories.’

‘Did not expect to have an existential crisis mid Childish Gambino set, but here we are,’ one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another added: ‘Childish gambino is currently doing some sort of demon summoning at coachella and i can just imagine tens of thousands of white people like “whens he gonna play 3005 man”’.

The performance comes after the star made history at the Grammys this year, winning both Song and Record of the year for This Is America.

For the first time ever, a rap song triumphed in both categories.

The breathtaking viral video for This Is America was also recognised by the Recording Academy as it was awarded Best Music Video.

And, to complete the set, the track also won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance – meaning that it had made a clean sweep in every one of the four categories that it was nominated in.

Glover did not attend the ceremony himself, but co-songwriter and producer Ludwig Göransson accepted the honour on his behalf.

‘I think if you listen to the radio or if you just watch our culture, if you look at the most downloaded, streamed artists… you see what people are getting inspired by,’ Göransson told reporters backstage.

‘It’s about time that something like this happened with the Grammys. They’re getting the same kind of senses as the people.’
