Chicago flights halted as plane slides off taxiway – latest flight updates

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lifted the stop at 9.45pm, but hundreds of flights already were cancelled on Friday due to an earlier incident.

According to Delta spokeswoman Martha Witt, a plane slid off an icy taxiway at Kansas City International Airport on Friday.

The Delta Airlines flight was taxiing to be de-iced before flying to Detroit when the nose gear slipped off the taxiway.

There were no reports of injuries aboard the plane which was carrying 123 passengers and a crew of six.

The airport was closed and many flights cancelled in the morning but flights resumed at midday, according to KCTV.

At 9pm, the Chicago Department of Aviation was reporting nearly 690 flights had been canceled at O’Hare, with 169 flights cancelled at Midway, the city’s other international airport, Reuters reported.

They said the storm will create “hazardous travel conditions” from the Plains into the Northeast through the weekend.

Snow is also forecast over much of the Great Lakes, with a blizzard warning for parts of the Upper Midwest.

This is the latest incident following a plane skidding off the runway in Wisconsin USA, Istanbul, Turkey and Toronto, Canada last week.

A Delta Air Lines flight came to a close call after skidding off the runway due to snowy weather conditions in Wisconsin.

Flight 1770, which was bound for Atlanta, Georgia, slipped off the runway before take-off and ended up partially on grass next to the tarmac at Green Bay Straubel International Airport in Wisconsin.

While none of the 107 passengers were injured in the incident, they all had to depart the plane and instead board another aircraft.

Jake Liebergen, a passenger on the flight, told WBAY: “It was scary at first because people kind of jumped and screamed a bit.

“We noticed he was going pretty fast around the corner and slid a little bit.”

Delta issued an apology for the incident and confirmed that the plane partially left the taxiway because of icy conditions.

Elsewhere, a plane carrying 164 passengers skidded off the runway in Istanbul earlier this month.

The Pegasus flight was arriving from the United Arab Emirates’ Sharjah as it slid off the runway while landing.

Those on board the Boeing 737-800 were evacuated using emergency slides and there were no reports of injury.

Storms and heavy rainfall affected the city and played a role in the plane’s struggle to land.

In a press release, Pegasus Airlines said: “The Pegasus Airlines flight PC747, on a TC-CCK registered aircraft, travelling from Sharjah International Airport, UAE, to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, Turkey, on 7 January 2020 experienced a runway excursion after landing at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen.

“All passengers and cabin crew have been disembarked safely from the aircraft. There has been no loss of life or injury to anyone on-board. The necessary investigations have begun and we will continue to provide information with regards to any further updates.”
