Cheryl on almost getting DROPPED by record label: ‘It wasn't selling’

The superstar shot to fame as a member of Girls Aloud back in 2002, after which they scored a Christmas No1 and a hit album, both called Sound of the Underground. But given that they had been formed on a TV show, bosses wanted their record sales to be considerably higher than they were – and very nearly gave them the chop. Now, well over a decade later, Cheryl – one of the most successful artists in the country – has revealed that one member of their team persuaded execs to give them a lifeline.

She told BBC News: “Did you know that we were almost dropped by our record label after the first year?

“The first album did alright, but it wasn’t selling to the all the people who watched the TV show.

“Twenty million viewers wasn’t turning into 20 million sales.”

She added: “So we were almost dropped, then Peter Lorraine [marketing director at Polydor Records] said, ‘No, give them one more album,’ and we did What Will The Neighbours Say.”

That LP spawned hits such as The Show, Wake Me Up, the number one I’ll Stand By You, and one of their most iconic songs – Love Machine.

“After that things got good,” Cheryl added.

In the same interview, she reflected on the group’s reunion tour in 2013, which came after a brief hiatus.

Sadly, it wasn’t as joyous for the band – also comprised of Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts – as it was for their fans.

Asked if it was “nice” to return, she responded: “Not really, if I’m honest. There were still some underlying issues that had never been addressed, sadly.

“It could have been a lot more fun than it was for us.

“We’d been off on our own for so long that you’re not in the same bubble you were in first time round. That bubble had popped.

“There were great bits, too. Times when we cried from laughing. It just didn’t have to be as tough as it was sometimes. That’s all.”

Today, Cheryl has released her latest single: Let You.

With co-writers including Roberts, it’s a summery floorfiller that has already rocketed to No3 on the UK iTunes charts, at time of writing.

It comes after the success of her comeback track Love Made Me Do It last year; which became her tenth Top 20 song as a headlining solo artist.

Let You by Cheryl is out now.
