Chernobyl showrunner reveals two things that DIDN’T really happen

Chernobyl had five incredible weeks of TV for viewers who dared to sit through the true events of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion in 1986.

While the show depicted a lot of drama surrounding the events from a number of different perspectives, it retained most of the true story for viewers to get the real picture of what happened.

However Craig Mazin, showrunner of Chernobyl, recently spoke out on his podcast which accompanies the show about what he left out.

And the HBO boss revealed he decided to include two factors that did not happen as the horriying events unfolded.

The first change was the inclusion of Emily Watson’s character Ulyana Khomyuk – who was created on the show.

According to Craig, she more represents a number of people rolled into one.

He explained on the podcast: “There were hundreds of scientists that worked on the problem of Chernobyl.

“Valery Legasov was the scientist in charge, but there were so many more involved, and a lot of them were in positions of opposition to Legasov.

“They were at times more aggressive about the dangers, they challenged him on some of the solutions he was considering.

“In order to consolidate these people into one, I felt I had to create a composite character.”

Thus, Ulyana was created for the show in order to consolidate the story whilst still keeping the events and actions accurately portrayed.

The second huge change was the final trial of the show; namely, the inclusion of Valery Legasov (Jared Harris).

Craig revealed: “Legasov was not at the trial.

“[This was] enormous dramatic license that I took out of necessity.

“I could have portrayed this trial exactly as it unfolded – with other people – but we wouldn’t have known who they were, and we wouldn’t have cared.”

“It also took weeks and was quite boring,” he added.

The show’s final trial detailed off the repercussions of the harrowing event, and what happened next – but this was condensed as well.

Recently Craig spoke about a scene he left out of the show which concerned the Liquidators.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Craig revealed episode four originally had a horrifying scene regarding the pets of Ukraine, which he eventually chose to leave out of the final cut.

Chernobyl is streaming on NOW TV now.
