Chelsea warned against Philippe Coutinho transfer amid Bayern Munich struggles

Chelsea have been warned against signing former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho this summer.

The Brazilian playmaker has endured a difficult period in his career since leaving Anfield two years ago.

After failing to cement his place at Barcelona, Coutinho is now experiencing further struggles on loan at Bayern Munich.

As it stands Coutinho will be heading back to the Nou Camp in the summer where he is surplus to requirements.

A big-money switch to Stamford Bridge has been mooted, but former Blues captain Frank Leboeuf has urged his old club to look elsewhere.

Asked by ESPN whether he could see Coutinho fitting in at Chelsea, Leboeuf replied: “I don’t think so.

“Coutinho has been good with Liverpool, so far poor with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

“I would have lots of question marks seeing him coming to Chelsea, to bring what?

“We have young players, very talented, who are very promising.

“We have good midfield players with [Mateo] Kovacic and Jorginho, to organise the game.

“I don’t know where his place would be. If I was the chairman, if I was the coach, I would be very hesitant to pick him up.”

Chelsea are already said to have been in contact with Barcelona over the potential transfer of Coutinho, as Bayern look set to veto their option to buy the midfielder.

The 27-year-old would come with a hefty fee, with Barca keen to recoup much of the initial £106million they paid to Liverpool.

Much of Chelsea’s interest could depend on whether the club are able to secure Champions League football next season.

The Blues are hardly short of midfield options already, though they seem certain to lose Willian and Pedro this summer.

Both players are out of contract at the end of the season, and neither look set to pen a new deal, which could make room for Coutinho’s arrival.
