Chelsea transfer roundup: Havertz rival backs out, record bid for Oblak on cards

Chelsea may yet end the season having won the FA Cup and secured qualification for the Champions League, which would certainly make 2019/20 a very tidy debut campaign for Frank Lampard.

The Blues are still keen to improve their squad, though, having already secured the signings of Hakim
Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

It doesn’t look likely that the club’s spending will end there either, with countless further players being linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.

Here are the latest rumours regarding top talent who could be on their way to Chelsea this summer.

Path open for Havertz transfer?

Kai Havertz reportedly has a release clause of £90m

Kai Havertz is one of the hottest young properties in European football at the moment. The 21-year-old has scored 12 goals and provided six assists in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen this season and looks set to depart this summer.

He has been linked with a move to Chelsea for a while now, and though competition for his signature was expected to be fierce, one significant rival has reportedly stepped aside.

According to SportBild, via the Mail, Bayern Munich are not going to sign Havertz. The German champions frequently hoover up the best players from their rivals in Germany, so Chelsea’s chances of completing the signing have definitely improved.

However, as Havertz’ release clause is reportedly £90million, the Blues will have to make him one of
the most expensive players of all time if he is to be turning out for them in 2020/21.

Alonso could be heading back to Spain

Marcos Alonso could be out in the cold if Chelsea sign Ben Chilwell

Chelsea have made no secret of their desire to purchase a new first-choice left-back. Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell is top of their shopping list if rumours are to be believed, but whoever they end up signing, the new boy will surely dislodge Marcos Alonso.

Aside from one minute for Real Madrid back in 2009/10, the Blues’ Spanish left-back has never played in La Liga. That might be about to change though, as Sevilla are said to be keen on bringing Chelsea’s number three back to his homeland.

Spanish sports paper Estadio Deportivo (via the Standard) are reporting that manager Julen Lopetegui is on the lookout for a new left-back as both Sergio Escudero and Sergio Reguilon could be leaving the club.

Blues set to smash goalkeeper record again?

Jan Oblak is on Chelsea’s radar but he won’t come cheap

Kepa Arrizabalaga became the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when signing for Chelsea for£71.6m two years ago.

His time in west London has been turbulent to say the least, with his form deteriorating to such an extent earlier this season that Willy Caballero took his place in Lampard’s 11.

According to Spanish daily Diario AS (via ESPN), the transfer record for a goalkeeper could be about to be broken by Chelsea once again. They claim the Blues are about to offer a stunning €100m for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.

The Slovenia international is widely considered to be among the world’s top players in his position, and is under contract for another three years, so if he is to be prised away from Diego Simeone’s clutches, it will take an enormous offer.

If he can be secured, Chelsea’s defensive record should improve immediately.
