Chelsea transfer round-up includes Mendy confusion as forgotten man set for loan

Indeed, after signing six players, including exciting German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz and Moroccan playmaker Hakim Ziyech, some feel as though the Blues are well-placed to sustain a title challenge this season.

The additions of Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Ben Chilwell will also add steel to the Chelsea defence.

However, they are not believed to be done yet, with the club reportedly eyeing one or two more deals before the transfer deadline on October 5.

A goalkeeper and a centre-back are on Frank Lampard’s wish list.

Here is your Chelsea transfer round-up.

Mendy deal set to be announced

Chelsea are keen on signing Edouard Mendy

Edouard Mendy could be announced as Chelsea’s latest signing today, according to the goalkeeper’s agent.

The Rennes stopper is closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge, where he is expected to challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No.1 spot in Lampard’s side.

Djily Dieng revealed Thursday that Chelsea and Rennes had reached an agreement.

“The two parties have come to an agreement,” Dieng told Senegalese newspaper Stades.

“All that’s left is the formalisation. It could even be done tomorrow, if all goes well.

“Afterwards, the player himself will come to finalise everything, including having his medical examination.”

Rennes still pushing for Tomori loan

Tomori could leave for Rennes on loan

However, despite Dieng’s comments, reports in France claim that Chelsea and Rennes are yet to come to an agreement.

According to L’Equipe via Get French Football News, the Ligue 1 side are determined to land Blues defender Fikayo Tomori on loan as part of the deal.

As per GFFN, Rennes will accept a bid of €28m including bonuses plus Tomori on loan, although the centre-back is also being chased by Everton.

Doubts over Rice pursuit

Chelsea are keen on Rice

While Mendy appears certain to become Chelsea’s newest recruit, fresh doubts have emerged over the club’s pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, the Hammers are not willing to sell the England international under any circumstances in the current window.

“In essence, the view of the West Ham hierarchy, as I understand it, is that Rice is not for sale under any circumstances,” he said on the Ask Ornstein podcast.

“Others I’ve spoken to, who are very close to West Ham, say that their stance is true – that he will not be leaving, that it’s unthinkable in this transfer window.

“It’s just my knowledge, and I’m not saying it’s going to be the case, but I just don’t see that happening.”

Simon Phillips, however, claims that West Ham’s stance will not deter Chelsea from making a move with the Blues expected to submit a formal bid after completing the Mendy deal.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian full-back is set to join Serie A side Genoa on a season-long loan.

Zappacosta joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day in August 2017 but has struggled to nail down a regular starting place during his time in England, making just 26 league appearances before a loan spell at Roma was disrupted by an ACL injury.

The 13-time Italy international did recover, however, to make eight appearances for Roma following lockdown.
