Chelsea have rubbished claims that club director Marina Granovskaia has acted out of step in the pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz.

The Blues are keen to bring in the Germany international this summer, as they continue their spending spree that has already seen them secure the signatures of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

The club, though, has ‘vigorously denied’ the suggestions that Granovskaia has been using her contacts in Germany to try and secure an advantage in discussions for Havertz, in a manner that would be viewed as very poor form.

The accusation is that Roman Abramovich’s advisor has been digging for weaknesses in the hierarchy at Leverkusen, hoping that finding the weak spots in their set-up will allow Chelsea to hold an advantage in transfer discussions.

Chelsea have rubbished these claims, though, saying they are completely false.

A Chelsea spokesperson told the Press Association: ‘We vigorously deny these suggestions; these claims are a complete fabrication.’

45-year-old Granovskaia has worked closely with Abramaovich for nearly two decades and moved to London when he bought Chelsea in 2003.

She has worked as a representative of the oligarch at the club since 2010 and joined the board herself in 2013, with her main role being to deal with transfers.

German publication BILD made the initial accusations of how Granovskaia was pursuing the Havertz transfer, describing her tactics as ‘espionage’ as Chelsea looked to haggle down the price from Leverkusen’s £90m tag.
