Chelsea have held initial talks with Antonio Rudiger over a new long-term deal after a string of impressive displays this season.

A three-year deal, with the option of extending for a further year, is on the table but an agreement is not close.

Discussions have been somewhat interrupted by the postponement of the season due to the coronavirus crisis, but Chelsea remain determined to get him tied down to a new deal.

Rudiger has impressed Blues boss Frank Lampard since his return from a groin injury in December and Chelsea chiefs want him to commit his future to the club until 2023, according to Sky Sports.

His current deal expires in 2022 and there is no suggestion that he is keen on leaving Stamford Bridge.

However, there is interest from his home country.

Both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are admirers of the 27-year-old, who has developed into one of Europe’s top centre-backs since leaving the Bundesliga in 2016.

After a successful stint on loan at Roma, Rudiger left Stuttgart to join the Serie A side on a permanent basis before joining Chelsea in 2017.

When fit, he is Lampard’s first-choice centre-half and Chelsea have won three of the last four games Rudiger has started in all competitions, including wins over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
