Chelsea fan accused of racially abusing Raheem Sterling will not face charges after advice from lip reading expert

A CHELSEA fan accused of racially abusing Raheem Sterling will not face charges following the advice from a lip reading expert.

Colin Wing, 60, was accused of calling the Manchester City star a “black c***” during a match at Stamford Bridge in December.

But the BT manager, from Beckenham, South East London, insisted he screamed “Manc c***” after the video clip of him shouting went viral.

His claims were backed by independent lip-readers who told The Sun Online Mr Wing did not shout anything racist to the England winger.

The experts, who both have experience working with the police, said they believed Mr Wing had shouted “Manc c***” not “black c***”.

And according to the Daily Mirror, the Crown Prosecution Service has concluded there was not enough evidence to prove he shouted a racist remark.

A CPS spokesman said: “Having carefully reviewed the evidence, including advice from a lip reading expert, we have found insufficient evidence to prove that the words used by one of the individuals were racially aggravated.

“This means no further CPS action can be taken.”

Chelsea suspended four fans from attending matches following the incident during City’s 2-0 loss.

However, two other people will not face prosecution to lack of evidence.

It is believed Sterling, 24, told cops that he hadn’t heard any racist language when he went to pick the ball up by the corner flag.

Mr Wing, a dad-of-two said he lost his season ticket and job after the incident.

He apologised to Sterling and said he was “deeply ashamed”.

Mr Wing told the Daily Mail: “I’m deeply ashamed by my own behaviour and I feel really bad. But I didn’t call him a black c***, I called him a Manc c***.”

It comes a day after Sterling picked up an award for his anti-racism campaigning.

He was handed the accolade at the BT Sport Industry Awards in London by England boss Gareth Southgate.

Sterling was given the award in recognition this season for using social media to speak out on a range of issues, notably highlighting the racist abuse he has received.

He was among the England stars racially abused during last month’s Euro 2020 qualifying victory over Montenegro.

Sterling has also called for clubs to suffer points deductions when their fans are guilty of racist chanting.
