Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal LIVE: Eden Hazard GOAL, Score and Europa League final 2019 updates

CHELSEA 4-1 ARSENAL | GIROUD (49), PEDRO (59), HAZARD (64, 72), IWOBI (69)

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Luiz, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic; Pedro, Giroud, Hazard

Arsenal XI: Cech, Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Koscielny, Monreal, Kolasinac, Torreira, Xhaka, Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette

  • Olivier Giroud opens the scoring with clinical header
  • Pedro doubles Chelsea’s lead shortly after
  • Eden Hazard tucks away penalty after Maitland-Niles fouls Giroud
  • Subsitute Alex Iwobi pulls one back with incredible half-volley
  • Hazard grabs his second on the break – 4-1 with 18 minutes left

CHELSEA 4-1 ARSENAL | HAZARD

72: The comeback came and went in the space of three minutes. The Europa League trophy will be heading to Stamford Bridge.

It’s lovely combination play between Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud down the left channel. The Frenchman turns and crosses for the Belgian to slide home.

That little dinked pass from Giroud was delightful. Hazard now on a hat-trick…

CHELSEA 3-1 ARSENAL | IWOBI

69: Sorry, what?! Substitute Alex Iwobi has just scored an absolute worldie to give Arsenal a glimmer of hope with 20 minutes left on the clock.

An Arsenal free-kick is cleared straight to the winger, who strikes the sweetest of half-volleys past Petr Cech.

Game on, right?

68: Matteo Guendouzi and Alex Iwobi for Nacho Monreal and Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan is in tears as he takes his seat on the bench.

67: Pedro is the fifth player to score in a European Cup/Champions League and UEFA Cup/Europa League final, after Allan Simonsen, Hernan Crespo, Dmitri Alenichev and Steven Gerrard.

CHELSEA 3-0 ARSENAL | HAZARD

64: Who’s taking it? Yep, Eden Hazard on what most expect to be his final appearance for Chelsea. The Belgian strokes it cooly past Petr Cech and his colleagues make a huge fuss celebrating with him.

A hint he’s leaving? I suspect so.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA

62: Arsenal unravelling at a rate of knots here in Baku. Ainsley Maitland-Niles clumsily bundles into the back of Olivier Giroud and referee Gianluca Rocchi points towards the spot.

60: Maurizio Sarri just 30 minutes away from winning his first trophy as a manager.

CHELSEA 2-0 ARSENAL | PEDRO

59: Game, set and match? You’d have to think so given Arsenal’s lack of chances in this second half.

Chelsea have themselves a two-goal lead courtesy of Pedro, who collects the ball from Eden Hazard before sticking it past Petr Cech with a deadly finish.

Questions will be asked of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was bullied off the ball and expected the whistle to blow. Unai Emery is raging with that decision.

56: Olivier Giroud is the first player to score 11 goals in major European competition for an English club since Alan Shearer scored 11 in 2004-05 for Newcastle.

55: Heavily respected manager Alan Pardew… has dubbed that a “textbook centre-forward’s goal.” Still sharp as ever.

Pedro is awarded the first booking of the evening when giving referee Gianluca Rocchi a piece of his mind. A little too much of his mind.

53: Chelsea look like they’ve got the hang of this now as Eden Hazard turns on the afterburners to streak past Sokratis. The centre-back recovers with the help of Koscielny to foil the danger.

51: That goal from Olivier Giroud means he’ll be crowned the outright Europa League top scorer this season – pulling one ahead of Luka Jovic.

CHELSEA 1-0 ARSENAL | GIROUD

49: A goal! An actual goal! And I tell you what – it’s a mighty fine goal too that gives Chelsea the lead in this Europa League final.

Who else but Olivier Giroud! The Frenchman sends Chelsea ahead against his former side after heading Emerson’s low cross beyond the helpless Petr Cech.

Still 40-minutes remaining. What are this Arsenal side made of?

Chelsea vs Arsenal LIVE: Europa League final latest updates

48: Nacho Monreal is extremely fortunate to escape a booking when blatantly bodychecking Eden Hazard in full-flight. Referee Gianluca Rocchi completed misses the incident and shrugs his shoulders.

I think the apathy is rubbing off on the officials myself.

CHELSEA 0-0 ARSENAL

45: I made the decision to travel in via a different route to have access to a later train home tonight. If the first half is anything to go by – that was a wise decision.

Back underway in the final nobody wants to watch, visit or participate in. No changes for either side.

Twitter reaction

Max: For the love of all humanity please someone stop this going to extra time.

James: Pretty low on quality. Suspect the pitch/conditions/atmosphere have something to do with it. Arsenal were the better team initially but Chelsea have grown into it.

David: The bar is set pretty low for Saturday. All Spurs and Liverpool have to do is turn up and it’ll be a better final.

AND WE’LL HAVE LIVE COVERAGE ON EXPRESS SPORT… thanks for reminding me, David.

CHELSEA 0-0 ARSENAL

HT: Terrible atmosphere and the match wasn’t much better. The only talking-point was THAT penalty decision when Kepa collided with Lacazette.

A full seven seconds of added time just about sums it up.

45: I think it’s safe to stick the kettle on folks. This is walking football. It genuinely makes me long for a testimonial to liven the evening up.

42: Save! Lovely stuff from Chelsea. Nice intricate triangles tee up Olivier Giroud, who twists and pings a low effort across Petr Cech. The veteran stopper somehow takes the pace off it with an outstretched arm before Laurent Koscielny pokes it behind for a corner.

39: Sead Kolasinac has the freedom of that left channel and has done all night long. He pulls the trigger from distance and Kepa parries it away. Didn’t catch it though – which he certainly should have. Twice that’s happened tonight.

37: Chelsea hit back! Emerson is slipped though (not for the first time tonight) but fires straight at Petr Cech. I should probably give Cech more credit given it’s his last game as a professional – but I can be heartless like that.

35: Arsenal continue to dominate here in Baku. Unai Emery looks happy enough with plenty of thumbs to his players. Maurizio Sarri, meanwhile, looks about as happy you’d expect.

Read Kolasinac’s effort is deflected wide by the diving Azpilicueta before Koscielny heads the corner high and wide.

32: Eden Hazard draws in two or three Arsenal defenders before teeing up Emerson, who lashes wide under close attention from Sokratis.

Or Sokratis Papastathopoulos if you’re a stickler for full names…

30: Wooosh! Grant Xhaka unleashes an absolute thunderbolt from distance that clips the top of the crossbar before sailing over. Hit that with his weaker foot too.

28: What’s happened here? Oh, it’s Olivier Giroud being Olivier Giroud…

Chelsea break with N’Golo Kante drifting out to the right and sending a low cross in for Olivier Giroud. Instead of lashing it on the volley – the Frenchman attempts a clever flick and fluffs it.

25: Can hear the players calling to each other. It’s a European Final, this is silly.

23: The Blues have hardly put a move together tonight. They look a bit weak in midfield too with most of Arsenal’s aerial passes setting Auba or Laca free.

20: Chelsea survive another Arsenal corner. Nacho Monreal was looking to connect but David Luiz rose highest to head it away.

Incidentally, I have a feeling this penalty decision will be debated for the rest of time. Pick a side now folks.

19: Penalty appeal! Alexandre Lacazette goes down inside the box… it looks a good shout… it’s going to VAR!

The Frenchman flew onto Aubameyang’s flick-on and hits the deck after appearing to be clipped by the sprawling Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Nothing given. Tough decision really – not much contact but he didn’t touch the ball either.

16: Waste! Granit Xhaka summons his inner Xavi with a delicate switch of play that sets Kolasinac free down the left channel.

The left wing-back cuts inside from the byline but his low cross is easily blocked by Cesar Azpilicueta. The subsequent corner is easily cleared.

13: “Feel like I’m watching a pre-season friendly tournament. Really weird, actually quite sad. Football’s going to die, man,” says Michael on Twitter.

His sentiments are clearly echoed inside the stadium. “F**k off UEFA, is this what you want?” sing Chelsea fans inside the stadium.

12: Referee Gianluca Rocchi does well to ignore a blatant dive from Eden Hazard just outside the Arsenal penalty area.

9: Chance! First biggie of the night goes Arsenal’s way. Ainsley Maitland-Niles reaches the byline and pings a cross into the middle.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga unconvincingly pushes the ball straight back into danger and is very fortunate to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drill it miles wide.

7: Very, very little in the way of action in these opening seven minutes. Injury doubt N’Golo Kante looks to be moving freely in the middle of the park.

5: I’m fully expecting to see hundreds of complaints about the camera angle. It’s miles away from the pitch, as are all of the supporters. Football stadiums with running tracks are just a seriously tough sell.

Oh, and did you know it’s 11pm in Baku? If we get penalties this won’t finish until about 2am!

3: David Luiz’s first 50-yard cross field punt of the evening took less than 65 seconds. Pedro looked to drift behind Sead Kolasinac but no dice on this occasion. Petr Cech gathers.

1: Y’all ready for this? We’re underway in tonight’s Europa League final 2019!

Here they come!

19:59: The players are just emerging from the tunnel to a rather subdued atmosphere. We then hear a stirring rendition of the Europa League anthem, which goes something like this…

“Whooooooaaooooo Whoooo whoooo OO.” Certified banger.

Sad times

19:57: “Really sad to see thousands of empty seats a few minutes before kick-off. So many Chelsea and Arsenal fans would want to be here. The people of Baku have been very welcoming but the choice of venue remains ridiculous. Feels like an end-of-season friendly,” says journalist James Olley.

The ceremony

19:55: Oh… a ceremony here in Baku. What do we have here then? A DJ named Jonas Blue, who I’m reliably informed isn’t associated with the Jonas Brothers.

We have fireworks, pyrotechnics, cheerleaders and some youngsters running around the field in sync.

Ian Wright has described this opening ceremony as “pony” on Twitter. I think he’s being generous there…

Five-minute warning

19:50: Nearly underway in Baku folks. BT Sport are currently treating us to a never-ending montage of all the goals in the Europa League this season.

“Both teams are in search of immortality,” says the narrator. Glad to hear the winners will never die. Quite a reward I must say.

Five guys…

19:45: So who does the neutral back tonight? One consequence of Arsenal winning could just sway a few.

If the Gunners are triumphant then there would be FIVE English sides in the Champions League next season – no side will lose their place.

That would obviously leave Manchester United and Wolves playing Thursday night football.

Hazard can sign off in style

19:40: Eden Hazard will want to bow out with a bang in what is expected to be his final game for Chelsea.

The 28-year-old, who has said he has made a decision over his future and informed the club, appears likely to join Real Madrid later this summer.

The Belgium forward has a year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea are currently fighting a FIFA transfer ban over Financial Fair Play rules and cashing in on their prize asset now, rather than losing him for nothing next summer, would help balance the books.

“That would be good, that would be a nice last trophy,” Hazard told reporters on Monday.

It’s done, lads. It’s done.

Twitter reaction

Bryn: Respect to every single Arsenal and Chelsea fan that has traveled to Baku. Absolute credit to your clubs. UEFA must look at this. 70,000 seater stadium. Only 6,000 tickets per club, most of which were sent back. Killing the game.

Kawmi: Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea & Arsenal are not in England this week. What a glorious chance for Man United to get into the top 4. Oh wait…

Sam: Thanks for the memories Hazard. Thankful to have seen one of the greatest players of my generation play for my club. Here’s hoping he signs off with a win!

I was going to avoid that topic, Samuel. Thought it might take away from the potential glory.

Thumbs up!

19:30: Well that’s a relief – I was worried the limited access to Baku would prohibit the mascots from travelling.

But they are here! The Gunnersaurus, Stamford The Lion and Bridget The Lioness are all in attendance. Doubt they fitted their suits within the normal baggage allowance.

Sarri speaks

19:25: Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said: “We do not know exactly but N’Golo Kante is better. In the last Europa League match, Arsenal played with three defenders. We have trained more to face four defenders but also against three.”

On storming off yesterday: “I think that you were not able to understand yesterday, because if my players are very aggressive in training, I am happy. I was disappointed because we wanted to try our solutions on set pieces but after 15 minutes the cameras were there.”

Filling up?

19:20: So the Baku Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 69,870. Obviously with both sides sending back a combined 7,000 tickets – it’s not even nearly full.

And because it’s an Olympic Stadium – there’s a great big green running track surrounding the pitch that makes supporters look miles away from the action.

Just a joke they’ve held it here.

Suited and booted

19:17: Apparently the Italian media in attendance are staggered to see Maurizio Sarri wearing a suit for tonight’s final.

Someone tell him that you still can’t smoke in a suit…

Team News – Chelsea

19:15: N’Golo Kante passed a late fitness test to hand Chelsea a huge boost.

France’s World Cup-winning midfielder was given every chance to prove his fitness for the European showdown in the Azerbaijan capital, and managed to come through in time.

Eden Hazard starts up front alongside Pedro and former Arsenal man Olivier Giroud in what may prove the Belgium star’s Chelsea farewell.

Team News – Arsenal

19:10: Retiring Petr Cech starts in goal for Arsenal. The 37-year-old will retire after tonight’s match and manager Unai Emery decided to hand him a farewell appearance.

Cech was among nine changes to the Gunners side that won their final Premier League game of the season against Burnley on May 12.

The Gunners play a front two of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette with Mesut Ozil playing in behind.

What?! Shkodran Mustafi on the bench?! The banter years are officially over.

Twitter round-up

Gunner: Lacazette, Ozil, Aubameyang and Arsenal, Let’s win this final so that Manchester United can play in the Europa League next season… alone!

Tim: The line-up tonight suggests we’ll be relying on another Eden Hazard masterclass. Can’t help but be disappointed that Ross Barkley isn’t starting. Glad N’Golo Kante is fit in time though!

Jamie: Makes me sad that we Have TWO English teams in the Europa League Final 2019 tonight and not ONE English player in the starting 11.

Emery is ‘Mr Europa League’

19:00: Arsenal boss Unai Emery will make it a record-breaking fourth Europa League win as manager if his side overcome their London rivals.

And look – he’s even cracked out a brand new clipboard.

Emery, appointed as Arsene Wenger’s successor just over a year ago, guided his former club Sevilla to three successive tournament wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Giovanni Trapattoni is the only other manager to win the tournament three times, with Juventus (1977 and 1993) and Inter Milan (1991).

Jose Mourinho (Porto and Manchester United) and Rafael Benitez (Valencia and Chelsea) are among five managers to have won it on two occasions.

Cess picks favourite

18:55: Well actually he doesn’t. He sat firmly on the fence in one of the most quiet and irritating interviews BT Sport has broadcast.

Not sure if it was just my TV but I couldn’t hear a word.

Anyway, Fabregas says it is “impossible” to pick between former clubs Chelsea and Arsenal in the Europa League final – despite the fact he could end up with a winners’ medal if the Blues triumph.

“If you ask me to choose, I think it would be impossible for me to choose,” he said.

The starting XI

18:55: And here are tonight’s line-ups, folks. As you can see – Unai Emery keeps faith with Petr Cech, who makes his final appearance as a professional. N’Golo Kante is deemed fit enough to start after an injury scare.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Luiz, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic; Pedro, Giroud, Hazard.

Subs: Caballero, Cumming, Alonso, Barkley, Higuain, Zappacosta, Willian ,Cahill, Ampadu, Gallagher, McEachran.

Arsenal XI: Cech, Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Koscielny, Monreal, Kolasinac, Torreira, Xhaka, Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette.

Subs: Leno, Lichtsteiner, Mustafi, Jenkinson, El Neny, Guenfouzi, Willock, Saka, Amaechi, Iwobi, Nketiah, Welbeck.

Arrivederci Signor Sarri?

18:50: Well this is a thorny issue that simply won’t die down – and I suspect a victory tonight wouldn’t change it.

Maurizio Sarri could also be involved in his final game for Chelsea as speculation mounts over his future. The 60-year-old has not had an easy ride at Stamford Bridge after replacing fellow Italian Antonio Conte last July.

He publicly criticised his players in January, while it has been reported some senior players will look to leave the club if he remains in charge.

Champions League qualification and a possible Europa League crown is no guarantee that he will still be at the helm, with Massimiliano Allegri again linked with Chelsea after leaving Juventus and declaring his desire for an immediate new challenge.

Asked if he could end up at Juventus next season, Sarri said: “I want to think only to the final of course, then I have a contract with Chelsea for two years. So first of all I will speak with Chelsea, but this is not the moment. Now we have only to think to the final.”

Twitter round-up

Sam: I’m predicting 2-1 Arsenal – can’t overlook Unai Emery’s track record at this level, despite their dodgy defence, while Chelsea are a one-man team (for the last time before Eden Hazard leaves for Real Madrid!)

Newton: Chelsea need Champions League football again. I’m fed up of watching us play FK Narnia and Sporting Club de Westeros.

Chris: Even when you count international supporters – and there are lots of them for both teams – there are a lot more Arsenal fans in Baku than their Chelsea counterparts.

Any and ALL Game of Thrones references are welcome in this blog.

Perfect preparation

18:40: David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain were involved in a stunning bust-up during Chelsea training on the eve of the Europa League final.

Luiz and Higuain came together as the Blues were put through their paces at the Olympic Stadium in Baku.

Higuain appeared to challenge the Brazilian from behind, angering Luiz and causing the defender to lash out with his arm.

The pair exchanged words as Cesar Azpilicueta came over to intervene while manager Maurizio Sarri appeared to be infuriated by their actions.

The Chelsea manager stormed off the pitch towards the dressing room, throwing his cap on the floor and kicking it on more than one occasions while angrily gesturing towards his players.

Next up…

18:35: OK, that’s the negative stuff dealt with – let’s look at a few positives.

It’s outrageously pretty, Baku Olympic Stadium is fit for any final and the Heydar Aliyev Center might be my favourite building of all time.

There’s also a carpet museum…

What did the carpet say to the floor? I’ve got you covered. I’ll see myself out.

Safety first for no-go Mkhitaryan

18:30: Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will play no part in the final.

The Armenia international will not be travelling due to the on-going dispute between his country and Azerbaijan.

Despite assurances from Azerbaijan against any threat of violence, the 30-year-old was not convinced about his safety on the pitch and some Gunners fans have debated on social media whether to boycott the final in protest.

He has featured in 11 of Arsenal’s 14 Europa League ties this season, but missed their group game against Qarabag in Baku in October for the same reason.

Problems getting there and Baku again

18:25: Only one place to start, folks.

UEFA has been criticised for choosing Baku to host a major European final and apologised for the travel chaos experienced by both clubs’ fans, who face a round trip of 5,000 miles.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been allocated only 6,000 tickets each, which represents 17 per cent of the 68,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, due to restrictions over the number of people Baku’s airport can handle.

Despite concerns the stadium might only be two-thirds full, UEFA has defended its decision, saying it would be “utterly unfair to exclude certain venues just based on their decentralised geographical position”.

Evening…

18:20: Two Premier League rivals separated by just six miles in London travel over 2,500 miles to compete in an all-English Europa League final.

Ladies and gentlemen – welcome, to the Great British Baku Off.

Imagine having all day to think about my opening line in this blog and opting for that…

Moving swiftly on, Arsenal and Chelsea meet in Azerbaijan’s capital city to determine who will lift the Europa League trophy and book their spot in next year’s Champions League group stages.

It is the first time two English sides will meet in the tournament’s showpiece since Tottenham beat Wolves over two legs in 1972.

So when I say this is a rare occasion – I really do mean it’s rare. Not arguing with your family at Christmas rare.

Let’s get this thing going! Standby for the team news and line-ups.

CHELSEA vs ARSENAL – TEAM NEWS

N’Golo Kante only has a 50 per cent chance of being fit for Chelsea’s Europa League final clash with Arsenal in Baku.

Chelsea will give France’s World Cup-winning midfielder as long as possible to prove his fitness, with boss Maurizio Sarri admitting his absence would be a “problem”.

Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley will start in midfield should Kante fail to recover in time.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has yet to decide whether retiring Petr Cech will make a farewell appearance against former club Chelsea.

The Czech goalkeeper has started every knockout match en route to the final in Baku, where Henrikh Mkhitaryan decided against travelling due to his country Armenia’s dispute with Azerbaijan.

Aaron Ramsey (hamstring), Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding (both knee) are out, but Danny Welbeck travelled with the squad after sustaining a broken ankle in November.
