How do you make your mashed potato?

Whether you make it from scratch or just go for the easy option of buying from the store, your delicious carby goodness most likely includes milk as an ingredient.

But according to one chef, the secret to the creamiest mash is to boil your milk before you add it, rather than the stuff straight from the fridge.

Teen cook Morgan Hipworth, who runs his own Melbourne business Bistro Morgan Bakehouse, has shared the hack on his TikTok.

To make the side dish, the 19-year-old used potatoes, butter, sea salt and the hot milk.

Morgan said in the viral TikTok video: ‘I hate lumpy potato with a passion so here’s a recipe for perfectly smooth and creamy mash every time.

‘I promise you this will be the smoothest mash you’ve ever had.’

Try it next time you’re making the dish.

You could always try a masher (or a fork in a real pinch) but pushing them through a ricer or sieve will ensure lump-free mash.

‘Stir [all the ingredients] until your potatoes are light and fluffy,’ Morgan instructed in the video.

He added: ‘Taste your mash before serving and season with extra salt if needed. You can also add any of your favourite herbs.’

How to make the creamiest mash potato

Ingredients:

  • 500g potatoes
  • 100g butter
  • 100g boiling full cream milk
  • Sea salt to taste

Method:

  • Peel and cut up your potatoes into small chunks
  • Boil them in water seasoned with salt and once ready, put them through the potato ricer
  • Stir the mashed potatoes in the pot for five minutes to low heat
  • In a different pot, pour in milk and bring to boil. Slowly add to the potato pot, and then the butter.
  • Stir until the potatoes are light and fluffy. Season with extra salt if needed.

Followers of the teen chef loved the tip, with one commenting: ‘Mashed potatoes so smooth, I thought it was icing’.

Another wrote: ‘You are literally my inspiration, you are so talented’.

Others said they’d be trying it out soon.
