Cheers fans convinced iconic sitcom predicted coronavirus pandemic panic nearly 40 years ago

Fans of Cheers are convinced that the iconic American sitcom predicted the mass panic that would come to be associated with the coronavirus pandemic nearly 40 years ago.

Twitter user Kevin Biegel handily pointed out that the fifth episode of the comedy’s first season, broadcast all the way back in in 1982, sees barman Sam (Ted Danson) and his friends get a little antsy over sanitisation after one of the businesses regulars informs them of a ‘super-bug’ being developed in labs.

And because everyone is stuck inside during lockdown and has nothing to do but watch Netflix, some clever clogs uploaded the short clip as a preview on the site.

‘Brave to whoever is maintaining the Cheers preview page on Netflix right now,’ the user wrote.

The plot of the episode in question – which is named Coach’s Daughter – a customer called Chuck (Tim Cunningham) informs everyone of his new job working in a biology lab, where they experiment with DNA and mutant viruses.

As he leaves the bar, telling everyone he ‘feels better now,’ Sam and the entire cast start immediately scrubbing every surface in sight.

Have they got any hand sanitiser spare? We ran out…

And it seems this cheeky little throwback was more than welcomed by fans, who need a little light relief from everything going on in the outside world.

One fan wrote: ‘Life imitates art imitating life,’ which is just about as deep as we’re willing to go on a Monday.

Another called it a ‘classic,’ while one eagle-eyes binge-watcher announced that the clip had indeed always been shown as a preview for the show on US Netflix, but ‘it hits closer now.’

That it most certainly does.

This situation is also very similar to one at the start of the month, where a writer for The Simpsons joked that (like most things) the show had also managed to predict coronavirus.

And don’t even get us started on the Netflix show My Secret Terrius

Cheers is available to stream on Netflix in the US.
