Charlize Theron says 'it's a cold hard fact that women endure more scrutiny in the work place'

Charlize Theron says ‘women endure more scrutiny in the work place’ as she admits to feeling like a ‘loser’ when watching romantic comedies

Charlize Theron has told how she believes women endure greater scrutiny in the workplace than their male counterparts.

The actress, 43, stars in the new film Long Shot with Seth Rogan where she plays the US Secretary of State and falls for a journalist who becomes her speech writer.

Charlize believes it would have been ‘impossible’ to tell the film’s story without addressing the imbalance between men and women at work.

She said: ‘That is just a fact, that is a cold hard fact that women, not just in politics, but in a lot of work places, they have to endure way more scrutiny than their male counterparts.

‘So it would have been impossible to tell this story and not address that and it was nice to be able to touch upon things that I think people are really responding to.

‘It feels reflective, it feels modern and of this time and I think women look at it and it’s refreshing to hear a character acknowledge that and not feel sorry for herself but just acknowledge it and be aware of it.’

The actress also told how she wanted to make a film with ‘modern’ characters, explaining she sometimes feels like a ‘loser’ when she watches traditional romantic comedies.

She said: ‘I just wanted to make sure that we all agreed that we wanted to make a film that would have two characters that felt modern and felt at times conflicted and that we would focus on a relationship that felt real.

‘I struggle with that sometimes in romantic comedies, I feel like I’m the only loser who has never experienced the third act of most romantic comedies and it just makes me feel very bitter, and so I just wanted to feel like I could bring something to the table.’

She told Entertainment Tonight: ‘I’ve been single for 10 years, it’s not a long shot. Somebody just needs to grow a pair and step up I’m shockingly available.’

Charlize was joined by her Long Shot co-star Seth Rogen, 36, in the interview, who added: ‘She’s out there!’

She added: ‘I’ve made it very clear.’

Long Shot tells the story of Fred Flarsky, (Rogen) who reunites with his first crush, Charlotte Field (Theron) and he charms her.

As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly.

The Atomic Blonde star – who has children Jackson, seven, and three-year-old August – admitted last year that she had ‘no interest’ in finding a new partner while her kids were younger but with her daughter getting older, she admitted she could change her mind.

She said: ‘With both of my kids, the first two years, I had absolutely no interest in dating.

‘It wasn’t even a struggle – it was a case where my body chemistry and my mind just wanted to go to the place where I was 100 percent satisfied with being a mom.

‘And then … Well it kind of changes.

‘My little one will be three soon and I’m starting to feel like, “OK, I’m not dealing with diapers and wipes any more and you know something? Right now I’m really happy”.’
