Charli has some, erm, keen fans (Picture: Twitter/REX)

Charli XCX has admitted to feeling uncomfortable after being asked to pose with the cremated ashes of a fan’s mother during a meet and greet.

The 1999 singer, who has recently headed across the UK on tour, opened up about one particular fan meeting that left her pretty gobsmacked.

‘Have you seen the picture of me online holding someone’s dead mum? How mad,’ Charli told i-D.

Recalling the encounter, the 27-year-old continued: ‘The conversation was so quick and normal. It just flowed.

‘First, he was like: “Hey! Release Taxi, I’m so excited for the show – by the way, my mum passed away.” I said “I’m really sorry,” so he said “Don’t worry about it, can you just take a picture of you holding her ashes?”’

Admitting to be totally taken aback by the situation, she continued: ‘Then it happened, and now it’s online.

‘My face is sort of like…. Well, you can see it in my eyes, I’m afraid.

‘I sign a lot of poppers, people ask me to say “gay rights” a lot — but like, great! Gay rights! But yeah, holding the ashes was… new, and hopefully a one time thing.’

Throughout the course of her tour, Charli, who has a strong LGBTQ+ following, has been asked to pose with a number of, erm, inappropriate items predominantly by her gay male fans.

As well as the ashes, these have included numerous bottles of legal highs, and even a douche.

Many fans online have slammed this behaviour, accusing this subsection of her following of putting the 1999 singer in an uncomfortable position during her free meet and greets – a rareity in the music industry.

Things got even more questionable after the fan who asked Charli to sign the (he later clarified unused) douche admitted that the singer had had no idea what the item was.

‘I asked her to hold my poppers to my nose and she politely declined which I respect,’ he tweeted, ‘so I asked if she would sign this and she was like what is dis hunny [sic].’

‘Hope the clout was worth it?’ one follower wrote in response. ‘This is honestly one of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever see a “fan” do.’

And it seems like Charli might agree, simply tweeting: ‘Have some respect. That’s all.’

Charli XCX’s tour continues tonight at the Albert Hall in Manchester.
