People may have thought they were still dreaming after spotting a flock of ostriches racing down the street in China.

The group of huge birds, which are famous for being able to run at speeds of up to 60mph, escaped from a farm nearby.

They then made the most of their freedom, charging down deserted streets in Chongzuo city, in south China’s Guangxi province, early on Saturday morning.

Bizarre footage seems like something that could come from a Looney Tunes episode, showing the animals take over the street.

More than 80 of the birds escaped, with photos showing how one even managed to reach a motorway.

State broadcaster CCTV said the ostriches escaped after the gate to their pen was left unlocked.

Most of the birds have now been caught and safely returned, with the help of local police.

The largest weighed over 100kg.

Noone was injured during the incident, local media said.
